Aural Rehabilitation - Hearing Training

Even with the best hearing aids, patients will need to have follow up services. Our aural rehabilitation services include counseling on care and maintenance of hearing aids, counseling on hearing aid expectations and use, communication strategies and assessing for other special needs such as amplified phones and other assistive listening devices.

We help adults, children and families who need auditory training and communication strategies.

The Kooser Program
Communication can be difficult, even for people with normal hearing. When a person has a hearing loss, communication strategies become even more important.

We offer an extensive one day workshop, The Kooser Program, to help patients, family members, friends and co-workers understand and accept hearing loss, and to provide tools for hearing impaired patients to get their needs met through assertiveness training.

The Kooser Program was developed by Cathy Kooser-Fathergill, a licensed social worker, who has a severe sensorineural hearing loss. Cathy declares: "Although hearing loss plays a role in shaping and defining those of us who experience it, we cannot let it stop us from becoming who we are meant to be, nor from living the lives we are meant to live!"

We are trainers of The Kooser Program, certified and taught by Cathy to ensure and maintain the integrity of the material. The Kooser Program covers helpful information about audiograms, amplification and communication strategies. More importantly, it educates participants and their loved ones about assertiveness, self esteem, the emotional impact of hearing loss and how it affects personal and workplace relationships. We highly recommend that you bring a support person.

Our Goal
The mission of the Kooser Program is to enhance and empower, through education and support services, the lives of individuals with hearing loss and their families. Our goal for you and yours is to increase awareness of the hidden impact of hearing loss and provide strategies to effectively cope with this impact. Participants will learn about the following topics related to the impact of hearing loss:
  • Types of hearing loss
  • How to read an audiogram
  • Assistive listening devices
  • Negative coping mechanisms
  • Positive communication strategies
  • Psychological effects
  • Relationship issues

LACE: Listening and Communication Enhancement
LACE is an Aural Rehabilitation Training Software program, designed for home use, that has already helped thousands of people increase their listening and communication skills by over 30%. LACE Training is designed to enhance your ability to listen and communicate with or without a hearing instrument.

LACE was conceived at the University of California at San Francisco, Department of Audiology. It provides a variety of interactive and adaptive tasks that are divided into three main categories: Degraded Speech, Cognitive Skills, and Communication Strategies. Just as physical therapy can help rebuild muscles and adjust movements to compensate for physical weakness or injury, LACE can develop skills and strategies that can help compensate for those situations when hearing is inadequate.

We offer LACE at no additional charge to all patients who purchase hearing aids through our office. We believe that improved hearing is obtained through and effective combination of amplification and rehabilitative services. We are one of very few offices that offer LACE CDs to patients.
